Most people picture litigation as the moment in the courtroom: the objection, the cross-examination, the verdict. That moment is real, but it sits on top of months of quieter work. That quieter work is where I spend my days.
I’m Benjamin Amelkin, a litigation paralegal at Silverman Law Office, PLLC. My job is to help our attorneys build cases from the ground up and to help our clients feel prepared and informed while they go through one of the most stressful experiences of their lives. For those facing disputes involving a will, trust, or estate Billings, MT probate litigation lawyers can help protect their interests and navigate the legal process.
What a Litigation Paralegal Actually Does
Litigation is the process of resolving a dispute through the court system. It covers everything from a contract disagreement between two businesses to a dispute over an estate. Very few cases ever end in a trial, with most often being settled long before anyone steps into a courtroom.
A litigation paralegal keeps that process organized and moving. On any given day, I might be:
- Tracking court deadlines and making sure nothing slips through the cracks;
- Drafting pleadings, motions, discovery requests, and correspondence for attorney review;
- Organizing and reviewing documents, records, and evidence;
- Preparing exhibits, deposition outlines, and trial binders;
- Coordinating with clients, opposing counsel, court reporters, and court clerks.
No two days look the same. One morning is spent combing through hundreds of pages of records for a single key detail, while another morning may be spent on the phone helping a client understand what comes next.
Why I Love This Work
Every case is a puzzle. A dispute arrives as a pile of facts, documents, and competing stories. My job is to help sort it into something clear and persuasive. Finding the one email, date, or detail that changes how a case looks never stops being satisfying.
The details matter, and I’m a details person. In litigation, a missed deadline or a misfiled document can seriously harm a client’s case. I take pride in being the person who catches those things before they become problems. Staying organized under pressure is a skill I enjoy sharpening every day.
I get to work on a real team. Litigation is never a one-person job. I work side by side with our attorneys and other staff, and because of the high-stakes nature of the work, we are able to form real trust and admiration for each other. At Silverman Law Office, collaboration and growth are built into how we work, and that makes me better at what I do.
The work makes a difference for people. Behind every case file is a person or a business going through something hard. Helping them get through it and seeing their relief when a matter is finally resolved is the most rewarding part of my job.
What This Means for Our Clients
Being involved in a lawsuit can feel overwhelming. The process is unfamiliar, the timelines are long, and the stakes are high. A big part of my role is making that process feel more manageable.
When you work with our litigation team, you can expect:
- Clear communication. You’ll know where your case stands and what to expect next.
- Thorough preparation. Your documents, evidence, and deadlines are organized and tracked from day one.
- A responsive team. If you have a question, you have people to call who know your case.
Our attorneys provide the legal strategy and advice. I help make sure everything behind that strategy is ready, accurate, and on time.
